Marjorie Williams is an artist whose work delves into the transformative essence of light, the allure of human connections, and the enchantment found in the ordinary. Employing both analog and digital photographic processes, they skillfully capture not only the visual aspect but also the emotional resonance of the world around them.
A graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Photography and a minor in Museum Studies from the University of Nevada, Reno, Marjorie has a multifaceted background. After spending a year and a half in Portland, Oregon, they embarked on a cross-country photographic journey during the summer of 2022. Currently based in Dover, New Hampshire, Marjorie continues to explore and depict the beauty inherent in their surroundings.
In 2023, Marjorie embarked on a compelling project titled “You and Me,” re-engaging with premeditated modes. This series features large-scale, posed portraits of Marjorie and their partner, meticulously crafting scenes through a process of envisioning, location scouting, and dramatization. The images serve as translations of lived experiences, blending memory, improvisation, and fiction. Often recreating joyful memories and cherished moments, the project challenges the limitations of documenting one’s own life.
A central theme in Marjorie’s work is the exploration of queer life, stemming from their nonbinary identity and their partner’s transfeminine identity. Seeking to transcend clichés and challenge normative representations, the project aims to queer the conventional aesthetics associated with “girl power” prevalent in art and popular culture. By placing their experiences within a broader landscape, Marjorie confronts and reshapes perceptions of queer life beyond conventional norms.
